What You Need to Know About Taking Vitamins for Bariatric Needs:
Unfortunately, we cannot just pop all of the pills into our mouths at once and be done for the day. They need to be staggered with care. Here are some rules about vitamins you may not have ever considered, but are very important!
—Space calcium and iron 2-3 hours apart, otherwise they will block your body’s ability to absorb the other. If taking either with a multi-vitamin, check the ingredients on the multi-vitamin to make sure the other is not included.
—B12 is best absorbed sublingually, so make sure you purchase the kind that dissolves under your tongue, and not a pill you swallow whole.
—Vitamin C helps iron absorption, so try taking a vitamin C with your iron.
—Vitamin D helps Calcium Citrate absorption, so try taking a vitamin D along with your calcium.
—Make sure your Calcium is “Citrate”, very easy to overlook! Avoid purchasing calcium carbonate, as those have been known to cause kidney stones.
—Double up on regular multi-vitamins to fulfill our bariatric needs.
—Adding in a Multi B Complex is a very good idea to ensure those crucial B vitamins!
—Chewables are OK, but never gummies. Our pouch cannot leech out the vitamins from gummies.
—Use grown up vitamins, not Flinstones vitamins or others made for children. They do not contain nearly enough vitamins to meet our needs.
